Paignton

In Devon, Paignton (/ˈpeɪntən/ PAYN-tən) is a Tor Bay town that is seaside. Domesday Book of AD 1086 mentions Paignton as Peintone in the ancient hundred of Kerswell. In 1294, Paignton was given the status of a borough. Opened on 2 August 1859 to passengers, providing Paignton and Torquay with a link to Torbay, Dartmouth, and London, built the line to Paignton.

It merged with the villages of Goodrington and Preston as Paignton's population grew. Launched in 2016, the Torbay Air Show is held over the Bay in front of Paignton Sands in June annually. Known as the "Torbay Carnival", the Paignton Festival is over 100 years old and is held annually in July. In Paignton Cemetery, Heaviside is buried.

Opened 1928 and part of the Dartmouth Steam, Goodrington Sands is the other station in Paignton Along with a fireworks display, there is a funfair on Paignton Green during this period. In 1911, Tramways of Torquay into Paignton were extended, but, in 1934, closed. The Palace Hotel and the Inn on the Green, which as homes were built for Singer's sons Mortimer and Washington, include Singer legacies in Paignton.

The United Kingdom Census of 2011, Paignton's population was 49,021. Until the 19th century, when in 1837 the Paington HA led to the construction of a new harbour, Paignton was a fishing and farming village (noted for grapes, cabbages and cider). On Church Street, Winner Street and Palace Avenue which contain examples of Victorian architecture, are where the historic part of Paignton is centred.

A place named after who published in 1536 a translation that is English of the Bible, Bishop Miles Coverdale, is Coverdale Tower adjacent to Paignton Parish Church. Until April 1968, an urban district council governed the town, when the Torbay County Borough Council creation led to a body covering Brixham, Paignton, and Torquay. Used for water sports, Paignton beach and Preston Sands are continuous at low tide.

Inspired by UNESCO Global Geopark of which Paignton is a part, Paignton Green has a children's play area, the Paignton Geoplay Park, and an Adventure Golf course that is themed. With another beach that is popular backed by Young's Park, with Splashdown Quaywest, an outdoor waterpark, and its boating lake, Goodrington lies within the former Urban District of Paignton.
